05 May

Preamble

“God’s creation is one and it is good. The concerns for non-violence, sustainable development, justice and peace, and care for the environment are of vital importance for humanity.”

Pope Benedict XVII World Youth Day Address, Barangaroo, Sydney 2008

It is in response to the prevalent and unpredicted visible and touching realities of poverty and human cum environmental degradation around us and in a view to make the world a better place that the Holy Ghost Congregation (Spiritans) had to establish a commission that would bring succour and a new dimension to the suffering face of the world. The commission is known as the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Commission.

The JPIC Commission of the Holy Ghost Congregation, Province of Nigeria SouthWest is an integral part of the Church’s mission of Christ for its evangelization as a means of promoting peace, justice, reconciliation and care for integrity of creation in the world and especially in the SouthWestern part of Nigeria.

The Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Commission is doing alot of fundamental outreach and evangelization amongst the poor and neglected people of Southern Nigeria’s Niger Delta Region. Oyede community is a good case study! Through the instrumentality of the parish (Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Oyede), Fr. Boniface Ugwo, C.S.Sp who doubles as the Parish Priest and the Provincial Director of JPIC Commission, a lot has been done in integral outreach and evangelization of the poor (Evangelizare Paupeuribus).

The JPIC Commission, Oyede Chapter is very much commendable for its grassroot mobilization, empowerment and peace advocacy. The chapter also undertake the following activities as part of our solidarity and purpose with the peasant people of Oyede.

a) Regular distribution of relief materials to the flood victims and the less previlege in our community. The JPIC Commission in Oyede is doing so much to cushion the devastated effects of the last years’s flood disaster by providing relief materials regularly to those affected. The JPIC Commission have provided relief materrials monthly since the inception of the flood. The relife materials are donated by some friends of the Holy Ghost Fathers, Spiritan Associates and some well meaning Nigerians.

b) Regular pastoral care to the aged, widows, sick and those who are disable in any form. The JPIC Commission in collaboration with the pastoral team in the parish is extending its tentacles of succour, charity, peace, benevolence and financial aid to enriching the lives and welbeing of the aged, widows and sick in Oyede community and beyond.

c) Care of those who have neuron-dysfunction (mentally ill). The JPIC Commission is also extending its olive branch to those who are mentally disabled by providing materials, counselling and conducive environment for their rehabilitation.

d) Self-reliance project: the JPIC Commission in partnership with the parish is engaging itself in self-reliance project for independence sustenance. We are engage in farming of crops such as moringa, vegetables, cassava and to mention but a few. The pictures communicate more on this reality.

e) Empowering of the orphans and those born out of wedlock such as awarding of scholarships (payment of their school fees) and provision of some basic and personal effects.

f) Peace advocacy and reconciliation. The JPIC Commission is doing a lot in the area of fostering peace, we undertake the arbitration of peace amongst families, community members and inculcating in the youth the necessity and unlimited relevance of peace building and dialogue.

CONCLUSION
JPIC is not just a project but a way of life. Thus, the work of promoting Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation (JPIC) belongs to all. Partners in this work are many ranging from individuals to many NGOs and others religions. Let us take the initiative and reach out in a spirit of openness to any glimmer of JPIC commitment in our communities.

Consequently, there is a huge task on the shoulders of the JPIC Commission, Province of Nigeria, SouthWest. We seek for individuals or groups who are willing to partner with us in this project of renewing the face of the earth. We request for your prayers, moral and financial support. Let us all join hands to make Nigeria and the world a better place.
